My name is Ryza Marston, an artist from Stz’uminus First Nation, raised in Ladysmith, BC. For as long as I can remember, my family has proudly practiced Coast Salish art and teachings. My knowledge comes not only from my father, Luke Marston, but also from my aunties, uncles, and my grandparents, Jane and David Marston. I credit my grandparents as some of the most inspirational figures in my career considering their dedication and creativity to coast Salish art
I grew up with a strong passion for art, which led me to explore many different mediums and styles over the years. However, I have always been drawn back to Coast Salish art, which I continue to pursue today.
I believe this is the right path for me, as I apprentice under my father and continue to develop my own personal style while strengthening my connection to my community through art and traditional practices. I am honoured to be part of the next generation of artists in my family, carrying on our art and traditions as the world around us changes.
Apprenticing with my father, Luke, has deeply shaped my understanding of form, line, and responsibility within Indigenous art practices. My work is grounded in Coast Salish visual language and cultural teachings, with a focus on creating pieces that honour both traditional and modern expression.
