My name is Olivia Cox and I was born and raised in Whitehorse, Yukon. I’ve been in British Columbia since 2017, and have only just recently entered the world outside of post-secondary. My work focuses on and frequently collaborates themes of self-identity, femininity, the human form, and the natural world. As a young Indigenous woman, I want to make concise and informed works of art that explore my passions, thoughts, and lived experience. I’m still learning, but I love expanding my practice.
I would like to create a series of portrait photographs that show my individual family members in their regalia. Like most Indigenous people, I have a large family. Because I live off-settlement and so far from home, I think of them often. A project like this would provide ample opportunity to not only create intricate, personal, and traditional portraits, but would also allow us to come together in a literal sense. Seeing all the portraits together would be a really powerful resilient sight.
