Karra MacIntosh

EMERGING ARTIST SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENT, 2023

I have a deep appreciation for indigenous artwork and I would love to share it with others that have a similar passion for creating traditional art. It has healed me when I had difficult obstacles to deal with in life. Working on projects especially with traditional and natural materials gives me a sense of connection and belonging. Art has always been a comfort to me and a safe way of expressing myself.

I plan on making this beautiful black shawl with fringe over the top and black fur sewn onto the hem around the neck connected together with an abalone button. Under the fringe I’m beading the northern lights around the shawl with trees and mountains in the front. Using seed beads for the northern lights and luminescent sequins for the stars. The lower back for the shawl I’m going to bead a group of First Nations dancing under the northern lights in a circle.

YVR Art Foundation acknowledges that its offices are located on the traditional, ancestral and unceded territory of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam) people. The Foundation’s work and outreach spans the territories of many Nations throughout what is now known as British Columbia and the Yukon, and our programs exist for the purpose of supporting BC and Yukon First Nations artists with grants, awards, exhibitions and research opportunities. We honour with gratitude the Nations who have cared for the lands on which we work, reside and visit, and who have stewarded them since time immemorial.
