EMERGING ARTIST SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENT, 2024
My name is Grace Edwards; I am an Indigenous artist from the Snaw-Naw-As First Nation. The primary art medium I utilize throughout most of my pieces is acrylic or oil paint, with an occasional exploration into drawing mediums of ink, oil pastels, and charcoal. The recurring theme within my art is my Indigenous identity and portraying my culture in a visual format that reimagines reality or emphasizes particular aspects of the culture. A vital motivation within my art is the importance of Indigenizing, reclaiming, and decolonizing, as these components inspire my work and aid my journey of reconnecting with my culture and learning my language. My goal as an artist is to inspire other Indigenous youth to reconnect with their culture through the arts and work toward feeling confident in their identity by relying on the spiritual and medicinal elements within Indigenous art forms.
